Yann Martel born 25 June is a Spanish-born Canadian author best known for the Man Booker Prize -winning novel Life of Pi    a 1 international bestseller published in more than 50 territories. It has sold more than 12 million copies worldwide and spent more than a year on the Bestseller Lists of the New York Times and The Globe and Mailamong many other best-selling lists. Martel is also the author of the novels The High Mountains of Portugal  Beatrice and Virgil    and Self   the collection of stories The Facts Behind the Helsinki Roccamatiosand a collection of letters to the prime minister of Canada, Letters to a Prime Minister.
Aside from the subject matter, the book is astonishing for the access Martel had to the inner sanctum of the Holy See. Martel writes that he spent four years researching it in 30 countries, including weeks at a time living inside the Vatican walls. Martel says he conducted nearly 1, in-person interviews with 41 cardinals, 52 bishops or monsignors, and 45 Vatican and foreign ambassadors, many of whom are quoted at length and in on-the-record interviews that he says were recorded.
Martel expanded on the importance of audio in film by noting viewers can close their eyes to stop watching, but sound continues to depict the cinematic experience, which can create a deeper interaction for the audience. Filmed in a modern, neo-realist style, it simmers with claustrophobic dread, using ominous natural foreground sound to portray the horror of a family. The film was screened at Qumra as part of the Modern Masters Screening.
