We purchased airfare and made reservations at Mazama cabins in May. When we arrived at the park on Sept 21 for two nights we found out the entire East Rim Drive was closed to cars! The entire weekend was devoted to bicycles on East Rim Drive.
While many of the park's features had been described by mountain men and other explorers, the West Thumb area was the first Yellowstone feature to be written about in a publication. Daniel T. Potts, a trapper in the Yellowstone region in the s, wrote a letter to his brother in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, regarding his experiences in this area.
Lots to see here. As well, there was a ranger explaining whey to pools of water look they way they do. And the unpredictability of the geysers.

One of the highlights of Green Thumbs is the Skills Championships, which showcase the various competencies of the landscape workforce in a wide diversity of areas, such as tree climbing, chainsaw operations, excavator operations, amenity turf maintenance, etc. The top three contestants of each area stand to win trophies, sponsored by industry partners. Contestants of the skills championships are also surveyed and judged on their workplace safety and health practices.
We awoke to an array of stone buttes, spires and pinnacles and were even more impressed by the gorgeous setting in the daylight. And we had a visitor. The Chisos Basin campground facilities are top-notch: clean and heated!

There are several hydrothermal areas in Yellowstone National Park. West Thumb Geyser Basin stands out because it is on the edge of, and partially submerged by, Yellowstone Lake, which creates a dramatic backdrop for the dynamic geysers, pools, and springs. Overlooks along the way provide great views of all the different hydrothermal features.
